Holcim selected to pilot the world's first science-based target for nature.

According to their press release;

Holcim is working with the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) to submit nature targets for validation in 2023, as part of a global initiative to set the world’s first standards for ambitious and measurable corporate action for nature.

You can read the whole thing here.

We don't really know what this means, as it is the usual impenetrable corporate gumpf that large corporations put out. We can't really see there is much here to hold them to, but they do mention "biodiversity", which gets us wondering about Britain's delicate rivers and streams.

The Aggregate Industries depot in Chelmsford in fairly close to the river, and so much of this industrial fallout could be ending up in the River Chelmer. We are not qualified to offer opinions about the effects of this kind of pollution on aquatic wildlife, but I do wonder if having large amounts of crushed limestone effects the pH levels of the water, or how it affects the General Hardness and TDS. Knowing a little, we also have to wonder if the increase in minerals like silica would increase the kinds of algae found locally, and if this has any knock-on effect further up the food chain.
